Scan in Store (SIS)

Goal: Acquire the Walmart store's foot traffic from the physical store. Store shoppers are estimated to be 120 Million/week. The conservative target is to get 1% shoppers to start using Vudu online.
CHALLENGE

The process starts in the physical world and ends in the digital world. Thus creating unique challenges as the onboarding flow needs to include elements from both.

Can this process be streamlined to get the store shoppers to use Vudu?

APPROACH

Given the entire flow, the best approach was to split it into two steps.

  • 1st step is to get the Walmart store customer to take note of Vudu banners and to scan a barcode.

  • 2nd step is using the mobile phone app that starts after scanning the code.

My main aim was to reduce the user dropout rate once the user scans the barcode in the store.

Based on the study, the conclusion was that the users wanted instant results and not wait for the DVD to be available in the store. Users also disliked the lengthy process of searching for movies on their phones.

This product's success solely depended on how delightful the purchasing process was after the user scanned the code.

SOLUTION

To get the highest adoption for the new product, it was decided to show the final cost of the scanned title directly. The appealing part of this feature is to reinforce the fact, that the movie can be owned and watched immediately.

The focus is to highlight instant gratification achieved by placing text in the center of the screen.

For all users, we designed the process to be as close to 1-tap as possible.

OUTCOME

SIS was the first product targeted towards existing Walmart shoppers to increase online user base. It's success prompted a series of products that were developed to further tap into the current store buyers to become Walmart's online shopper
